FAQ’S
How to cook rice and chicken in the instant pot separately.
As a general rule, rice and vegetables should go in the pot together at this point. Instant pot users can place them on the bottom. Meat of choice should be placed on top which will cook first, followed by rice on top. Shortcuts of course are to use frozen vegetables, microwave previously cooked rice (more than one-day old is perfect), or raw precut veggies like celery, broccoli, or spinach that don’t require cooking time.
Adding liquid like coconut amines (instead of soy sauce), water, or vegetable stock will help prevent browning/burning at the base due to extended time under pressure; plus, it perpetuates flavor. This formulation generally yields two servings worth of volume for me but you can make as many as three servings by using chicken breasts.
How to cook frozen chicken breasts and rice at the same time instant pot?
Always cook on high pressure for 58 minutes. Add rice to the bottom of the cooking pot. Place frozen chicken on top of the rice. If there’s not enough room in the pressure cooker, just use one layer at a time.
Notice that the chicken will render juices while thawing no need to add any additional liquid aside from what the chicken renders in this process. Cook it sous vide if you want more control over the final product’s doneness level and texture. Use dry rice instead of instant if you want to be sure about how it turns out or make sourdough or other types recommended by people who are used to cooking different styles of rice/grain 😉 Sautee onions, and garlic with olive oil, chicken, salt/pepper, and other spices before placing in Instant Pot.
In what setting do you cook chicken and rice in the instant pot?
To cook the chicken on the rice, use this setting order in your Instant Pot: press saute button
—> Select “Less” or “Normal” timing to 20 minutes
—> then press cancel. Put chicken and vegetables (such as chopped onion, carrots, celery, and garlic) in a pot with fresh water or low sodium broth of 3 cups at medium heat.
Add spices like kosher salt and black pepper to taste. When you finish cooking it for about 1015 minutes on Medium heat using manual mode (or use the “Keep Warm” function), add rice into the pot (press the brown rice button if necessary).
You can also cook Frozen Chicken & Rice recipes in an instant pot with these steps: Same process as above.

Ingredients
- 1 ½ pound chicken breasts
- 1 medium chopped onion
- 4 tbsp butter
- 3 cloves garlic
- 4 cup chicken broth
- 3 cup firmer rice
- 1 ½ tbsp lemon juice
- 1 ½ cups white rice rinsed
- 1 cup cheese
- 1 ½ tbsp salt
- ¼ tbsp black pepper
Instructions
- Sauté the onion and garlic in butter until soft. Sauté for 34 minutes on low heat, or 10 more seconds if you're using an Instant Pot with a sauté function.
You're going to want some extra hot sauce for this one. Add the chicken and scrape up any bits on the bottom before adding in rice, broth, and lemon juice it’ll keep you warm all winter long. Bring them both near boiling point then give everything a good stir until cooked through, 510 minutes usually does it.
When your Instant Pot is done cooking, remove the lid and set it to Sealing. Then just wait 8 minutes until all of that deliciousness has been collected under a sturdy cover.
When you're ready to eat, remove the pressure cooker from heat and let it naturally release for 2 minutes. Quickly lift off any excess steam before moving on to step three: stirring in preparation for seasoning with salt and pepper. If desired, add another tablespoon or so of chicken broth until your soup reaches the consistency that suits YOU best; some people prefer a less thick texture while others like lots more broth added during cooking time because they know their preference will change depending on what's on their plate and in their company.
When you are ready to serve the soup, give it a quick stir and then quickly release all of its pressure. Season with salt or pepper accordingly before adding more chicken broth if needed for consistency.
