Sodium is a mineral and an electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance in the body. It's an essential nutrient, but most people consume much more than needed. The primary source of sodium in our diet is salt (sodium chloride), which is 40% sodium by weight.
While sodium is necessary for nerve and muscle function, excessive consumption is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300mg of sodium per day, with an ideal limit of 1,500mg for most adults.
The calculator uses the following formulas:
Less than 140mg per serving
140-500mg per serving
More than 500mg per serving
