Understanding Sugar Content in Recipes

What is Total Sugar?

Total sugar represents all sugar content in a recipe, including naturally occurring sugars (like those in fruits, vegetables, and dairy) and added sugars (such as table sugar, honey, and syrups).

Calculation Formula:

Total Sugar = Sum of all sugar content from all ingredients

What is Added Sugar?

Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to foods during processing or preparation. This doesn't include naturally occurring sugars found in fruits, vegetables, and milk products.

Calculation Formula:

Added Sugar = Sum of sugar from added sugar ingredients

Daily Sugar Recommendations

American Heart Association Recommendations:

  • Men: Max 36g (9 teaspoons) of added sugar daily
  • Women: Max 24g (6 teaspoons) of added sugar daily
  • Children: Varies by age, generally less than 25g daily

World Health Organization (WHO):

Recommends limiting added sugar intake to less than 10% of total daily calories, ideally below 5% for additional health benefits.
