About Dietary Fiber

What is Dietary Fiber?

Dietary fiber refers to the indigestible parts of plant-based food. Unlike other food components like proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, fiber is not digested by your body's enzymes and passes relatively intact through your stomach, small intestine, colon, and out of your body.

How Fiber Requirements are Calculated

Fiber requirements are based on age and gender. The general recommendations are:

  • Men under 50: 38 grams per day
  • Men over 50: 30 grams per day
  • Women under 50: 25 grams per day
  • Women over 50: 21 grams per day

An alternative calculation method is to aim for 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories consumed.

Benefits of Adequate Fiber Intake

  • Promotes bowel health and prevents constipation
  • Helps maintain a healthy weight
  • Lowers cholesterol levels
  • Helps control blood sugar levels
  • Reduces the risk of colorectal cancer
